Wasson Project
Dr. Michael Wasson, DMD, Asheville, NC Scope of my work: IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) Consultant and Interior Designer for newly constructed offices Project Description: Dr. Michael Wasson called on me to help him create healthy indoor air quality for his newly constructed dentistry office in South Asheville. He was given my name by a patient who was a green building enthusiast and had created one of the first active solar homes in our area. After meeting with Dr. Wasson several times on the indoor air quality issues we needed to face, he chose to employ me to take over the interior design as well since things were not coming together really well with the out of town designers.
I worked closely with the Beverly Hanks Construction Company and Dr. Wasson to specify and oversee the installation of 100 % recycled fiberglass wall coverings that are both breathable and environmentally safe as opposed to the often used toxic vinyl wallcoverings you would normally see in Dentistry offices. We also chose Collins and Aikman recycled content / recyclable carpet tiles with non-toxic peel and stick backing for all the carpeting throughout the waiting areas and offices. Dr. Wasson continued to make excellent sustainable, longsuffering and healthy choices including Forbo’s Natural Linoleum in place of vinyl composition tile and AFM Safecoat custom formulated non toxic water based Durostain and Polyureseal BP sealer for all interior wood paneling and trim. Factory tinted AFM Safecoat primers and paints were also used throughout.
Dr. Wasson and all of his staff were such a pleasure to work with, always willing to meet with me as needed to learn about what I considered to be the most project appropriate, time tested, green, sustainable and healthy materials for this project. The end result ended up portraying a very sophisticated, timeless blend of styles from the paint and stain colors to the floorings and furnishings with a warm and welcoming appeal, and very healthy to the body, mind and spirit. You might call this a dream project come true! I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to work with such a fine man as Dr. Wasson. |
