Schulz-Baker Project
Greg Schulz and Sharon Baker, Asheville, NC My Scope of Work: IAQ consultant, interior designer, product supplier and project coodinator for renovation for out of town clients Project Description: Greg Schulz and Sharon Baker relocated to Asheville, NC from Hayward County California with their 2 year old son Conner in early 2003. They chose a modest home in the North Asheville area built in the 1970’s. The functionality of the homes’ 2000 square foot layout had a lot of potential for aesthetic changes as well as spatial unification changes. Sharon and Greg were very fun to work with for many reasons. One of them being they were willing to trust in the process of all the changes being done while they were still in California working hard to transition and move both their family and very successful business here to Asheville. I am sure this was an incredibly stressful time for them! Our first meeting took place at the site while Greg was visiting. The previous owners were still living there- trying to move out within 2 weeks. The before shots you see were taken right after they moved out. I saw a need for better color definition and separation throughout the house as well as the need to update the architectural design of the living room, kitchen and stair area. I made those suggestions, which both Sharon and Greg agreed on. I then proceeded to recommend the contractors for the job. I prefer to work with contractors who are well suited for a job. I chose Stuart Zitin and Jim Gensichen because they built my small home. Stuart and Jim only work on one job at a time, they prefer small jobs and are very detail oriented and meticulous about their work. They only do quality work. This is what ALL customers want. However, this job was small enough that they fit the bill. So Stuart, Jim, myself, Greg and Sharon and several other subcontractors including painters, electricians and plumbers all worked together to make the changes you see in the photos within 2 months. It was a challenge, but a successful one for the most part! The Schulz / Baker’s chose to use all environmentally friendly materials due to Sharon and Conner’s struggles with allergies, which is the main reason they hired me as the healthy home consultant and interior designer. Their realtor gave my name to them. It was a great match up! I sent 12" x 12" samples of sheet rock samples with paint colors chosen by Sharon and Greg and myself for approval to them in California before beginning the painting process- along with contracts by the contractors for the renovation work involved. Cabinetry purchases along with preliminary tile and flooring choices were all done by Fed Ex as well. Greg and Sharon were not afraid to use color, which is my forte. My art and architecture background as well as my interior design degree came in handy. God has gifted me with the ability to use color and shape very creatively- usually resulting in unexpected color combinations that really work together to create a sense of harmony inside. I love my work! And I was truly blessed to work with such neat clients on this job.
