Scope of my work:

IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) Consultant and Healthy Home Designer for newly constructed residence

Project Description:

John Legerton, the architect, introduced me to the Belfors.  John introduced me as a consultant and interior designer for a previous project of his and we all worked together well.  John is an exceptionally good architect and a joy to work with and so were the Belfors!  Actually the entire green team on this project was easy and fun to work with including the builders (Carolina Cornerstone) and the site designer.

This project was dark green from the beginning, no greenwashing here!  Sandi Belfor had specific needs due to her battle with MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) and my job was to help make her home as safe as possible for her.  With that in mind, I provided specifications for all the finishes, flooring, fabrications, sealers, mastics and caulks, fireplaces, HVAC system and I had quite a bit of input on the actual architectural design in order to keep toxins out of the home. So I was a part of the project in the conceptual stages, which is right where I like to come in.

Belfor House
Longsuffering blend of fiber cement, stone and stucco materials
The utility and laundry rooms were completely separated from the main part of the home so that combustible fuels were eliminated from the indoor air.  The fireplace is a super efficient Lenox
Belfor Bath
Minimal, functional, bright and beautiful master bath
heating fireplace with zero combustion by products so that no wood smoke is eliminated into the interior of the home.  The HVAC-DAF(C) -(Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning, Dehumidification and Air Filtration (Cleaning)) included a Super Efficient Furnace with a Therma-Stor Ultra Air whole house dehumidification and positive pressurization ventilation unit along with a Lenox Pure Air ozone free air filtration system. Which in my eyes is the best system you can install to ensure healthy indoor air.  Because the house was so tight, some strategic exhaust of negative pressure was added at the tail end of the design earning it a Platinum green building rating through the Healthy Built Homes residential green building program. (For more information on this program visit the WNCGBC (Western North Carolina Green Building Council) website @ www.wncgbc.org.)

The finishes used throughout were AFM Safecoat NW Primer, Polyureseal BP, Safe Seal, Hard Seal Acrylac, Caulks and Mastics.  Any fabrications in the house were either existing or organic if introduced.  All wood that was exposed to the interior of the home was sealed with AFM finishes including Safe Seal and Hard Seal due to Sandi’s sensitivities to wood aldehydes.  The flooring is old heart pine from Whole Log Lumber in Hendersonville, NC.  The carpeting shown in the stair photograph is from Natures Carpet- a pure, pesticide free, organic wool with no chemicals.  Some sisal / jute area rugs were added once they were moved in.

The Belfor home sits in one of the most beautiful sustainable developments I have ever laid my eyes on and I was really proud and honored to be involved with such an incredible design / build team and the clients made it all worth it!  The exterior materials include stone, fiber-cement siding and stucco…3 of the finest materials you can use to create a truly sustainable home.  And, as you can see, with the Belfors- less is more, a visual pleasure!
