Project Description:

Becky Anderson and I go way back to 1988. This is the 5th home I have designed for her. One of the fun things about Becky is her desire to reuse as many old things as possible, even if we have to give them a new look. And you can bet we always have a good time working together. After 4 house designs, you learn how someone thinks and what they like- so the design process is much easier.

The Anderson's wanted a smaller home with low visual impact.	The outside has an Asian appeal.

This house was a bit different than the other 5 homes I designed for Becky. She and her husband Ed decided to work with a local licensed architect. Past projects included designing for a contractor designed and built home (2 in the same subdivision), a condo downtown and an older historical home.

The Anderson’s decided to buy a lot up on a mountain development in North Asheville, but unlike many folks who built up on this mountain, Becky and Ed wanted a smaller home that could not be seen from the road in front of their home or the road in the valley. Low visual impact was their goal in the design. They pretty much left the style of the home up to the architect. The house is beautifully nestled in the woods upon a mountain with plenty of privacy and lots of natural habitat. Very few, if any, trees were planted.

While the style is somewhat unidentifiable, it does have an Asian appeal to it on the outside. At about 3,200 square feet, it is a modest size suitable for their tastes and needs. I was responsible for the space planning, the lighting plan, tile designs and all the colors, finishes and furnishings in the house. The architect created the design on the outside.

Becky really loves greens and yellows as you can see. Because the main floor is pretty open, one color throughout with a ceiling color variation helped to unify the space and resulted in a warm and welcoming space. Fabrics were chosen to be simple, elegant but casual, like Becky and Ed. The inside entry / foyer carries the outside elements in and allows the Anderson’s to display some of their local handmade objects that are so dear to Becky. We have a tremendous craft community tucked in the mountains of Western North Carolina. More interested? Handmade offers a driving tour of all the different crafts people’s galleries and studios too.           A den and office offer contrast.                 Traditional taste with a splash of contemporary color. The Anderson’s really wanted a red den / office for a nice contrast to the soft blue / greens in the main space. They switched to golden yellows and greens in the master bedroom. We used a lot of her existing furnishings and reupholstered them and added some new pieces in the living room and master bedroom. The lower level housed the guest sleeping areas which had themes of a "yellow room" and a "green room" (shown). Becky and Ed have a fresh traditional taste with a splash of more contemporary color as you can see. Their home is very inviting and cozy for them and the many guests who visit. The Anderson’s are great people and a lot of fun to work with. I have a feeling that this is their last home, but then again things always change!
