Commonly asked questions about AFM POLYEURESEAL BP and DUROSTAIN:

If I am laying a hardwood floor and want a Satin finish, what is required?

Your first coat should be a 40 - 50% dilution ratio of the Poly BP Gloss and water. This will act as a pre sealer for your floor. It will raise the hairs up from the wood and create a clean slate for the grain of the wood to take the following coats of Poly BP evenly. Lightly sand after this coat.

Note: Some species (softer woods) will require presealing moreso than others. It is best to test this process prior to doing it on the entire surface to be sealed, as it may not be neccessary for some harder species.

Your second and third coat should be a full strength thin, evenly coated layer of Poly BP Gloss. Lightly sand between each coat.

Your final coat can either be Poly BP Gloss if you desire a semi-gloss finish (full strength, thin, evenly coated). If you desire a Satin finish, your final coat should be full strength of Poly BP Satin. Do not sand after this coat and let it sit for a full 48 hours before walking on it.

If you are choosing to use a DuroStain color with your Poly BP, apply it after your first coat of pre-sealer (diluted Poly BP Gloss). The DuroStain can be watered down and mixed with other DuroStain colors to create a custom color. It is a great product to work with, once you get the feel for it.

Some important things to remember when finishing your floors:

It is vital to keep your indoor air at a 40 – 45% humidity level when applying the Poly BP. If moisture gets in the finish it has a tendency to bubble. It also takes longer to cure. If you can’t control your humidity levels during application, you may get some bubbling. However, once it is possible to do so, you should dehumidify the space that has been finished completely- (2-6 weeks) to fully cure the finish. You can walk on it after 48 hours of application of the final coat. However, you should continue to dry the moisture out for full curing. I have learned this from personal experience.

Poly BP Gloss is a very durable finish. Poly BP Satin, if used just by itself (without the Gloss preceding it) is not as durable. Neither finish yellows or outgasses like regular oil based Poly’s do. However, the Poly BP (satin and gloss) does have an odor. This has been reported to me from clients who have used the product and this is my personal experience. It is still the least toxic Poly on the market that I have ever used--- and the most durable water based Poly ever made. The outgassing life of the Poly BP is very minimal in comparison to regular Poly’s.

Surface preparation
Remove all previous coatings to insure full, raw wood impregnation, and surface appearance. Sand all wood bare, with the grain, to the desired level of smoothness. Sanding is unavoidable for fine finishing results. Start with coarse grit and move to finer grit sandpaper ending with a final sanding of 400 grit.

All surfaces must be dry, sanded smooth, free of dirt, dust or grit. All nail holes, cracks and blemishes should be repaired after first application if possible and filled in with a filler that matches the wood color. Melting Saw dust from the wood to be filled, into this product is a natural way of making strong wood filler that blends into the wood effectively.

Application
One Application: Rub into surface with a clean lint free cloth, lambswood pad or sponge. Wipe off excess with dry rag immediately or within on hour.

Wipe on a second, thin coat. Wipe off excess within one hour. (This second coat uses minimal product, takes little time and results in a longer lasting finish.)

Applying Warm: A warm application is a master wood worker secret. Warming the wax and the surface is even more effective. However, simply placing Looking Glass Polish in the oven, slow cooker or a double boiler until it reaches 150&Mac251; F will allow the wax to melt. (Warning: Hot wax will burn skin, eyes and lungs if contacted. Wear protective clothing.)

Recoating: Do not strip. Simply clean and recoat within five years to build upon the petrification effect.

One Coat Wood Finish

One Coat Wood Finish beautifully protects wood and provides a high quality, sustainable alternative to polyurethane and other petrochemical products. Hard enough for floors and cabinets yet beautiful enough for fine furniture, like all Earthpaint Wood finishes, this product contains zero petrochemical solvents!

One Coat Wood Finishes designed to seal and protect wood after just one application, though a second coat may be desired to further increase the strength of the wood and create a smoother, glossier finish. Once applied, One Coat dries in a day or so and cures in 2-4 weeks like any paint. However, unlike paint One Coat does not simply rest on the surface but uniquely penetrates deep into the wood fibers. In this way, the fibers become hard, breathable and protected deep under the surface, naturally.

There is no need to worry about peeling polyurethane. If any area becomes worn, simply clean and rub more One Coat on.

Rainforest Sealer Wood Finish

Rainforest Sealer is a high solids, Low VOC, fully tintable & durable treatment for exterior wood. Oils and resins are specially designed to petrify into the wood. Additionally, there are mineral based Ultra Violet radiation blockers and mildew inhibitors built into this formulation. These are proven to effectively deter wood boring insects, wood decay fungi, algae and mildew. When raw wood in coated with this product it will be infused with some of the most compatible and effective materials in wood preservation.

The durable tree resins are able to penetrate, coalesce and harden with the beeswax and oils into a strong water repelling, sun-blocking barrier that allows the wood to breath as it needs to.

No stripping is necessary for maintenance and there will be no peeling to contend with. Any one can apply the maintenance coat by simply cleaning the surface and recoating, wiping off the excess when done. One application is all that is ordinarily needed and this coat uses significantly less material than the first coat.
