Atypical Explanations and Solutions to Typical Biological Contaminants in our Homes
(Article 1)

Once mold transfers and settles into the structure (walls, floor or roof) of a building, it becomes toxic. Just as God described it in the ancient of days, it is today......
Rather than regurgitate the large amount of information on mold and the dangers thereof in a home or building, my goal is to present some things that I have found to be problems with solutions that are not necessarily found in other books or periodicals.
Moisture and mold are well known today as culprits to home health.  Shelter Ecology offers some less conventional explanations to the origins, behavior and solutions to biological issues in the home. Learn how to keep the home more sustainably dry through the skin or exterior materials, through the head or roof of the home, the innards or guts and the feet or foundation.  Cindy's 20 years of personal and professional expertise leave the reader with concrete explanations and atypical solutions to controversial toxic home related issues.

The Site and Foundation; Keeping the Feet of the Home Dry and Toxin Free
(Article 2)
If at all possible, do not build a home with a crawl space or unconditioned basement- that is the most sustainable strategy for health you can take for your home.
All indoor air problems potentially start here- at the feet. Why? The feet have a tendency, if not properly waterproofed on the outside and taken care of on the inside, over time, their defenses will break down and moisture infiltration through wicking will occur, causing mold and fungi infections. Sound familiar? No, I am not talking about your feet, but your home’s feet. They have a lot in common.
Cindy offers some realistic comparisons between the home as a system to the human body as a system starting with the feet or foundation.  Sustainable, longsuffering structures must have dry feet.  Learn how this is really achieved and sustained- regardless of whether you are renovating or building new; resulting in a vitally healthy part of your home.

Inescapable Chemicals; What You Don't Know Will Hurt You
(Article 3)

Formaldehyde, whether phenol or urea (more toxic of the 2) based, is a gas and if it is not sealed in, it will literally “outgas” through other building materials- right through the 0VOC paint and into the indoor air. Because it is trapped within the core of the sheathing, there is no determined amount of time that this material stops outgassing; it can take years. Formaldehyde laden building products including sheathing must be avoided or sealed in, in order for indoor air to be healthier, there is no gray area here.
Learn proven time tested ways to eliminate or seal out well known chemically derived toxins in the home life Formaldehyde and VOC's.  Gain remediation solutions to less commercialized toxins including residual pesticides in the home. Get honest definitions and descriptions to controversial contaminants, offering a lot of information packed into a readable amount of material.

HVACDAF(C): Redefining the System Approach to the Home; The Heart and Lungs of the Home
(Article 4)

Did you know that (H) Heating is the only part of this title that is required in every home according to most building codes?  Without the implementation of all the parts of this title in any given home in a mixed to high humid climate, it is impossible to create a healthy home.  This may be the most important article of my series. This part of the home can steer it towards longer life or certain death.
Why does the industry call itself "HVAC"  when they really only offer H, AC?  This article will focus on the parts that the industry does not focus on including Ventilation,
Dehumidification, Air Filtration and Cleaning.  Cindy has learned over the past 12 years of experience in building, designing and consulting in the "green" building industry, the most appropriate ways to use these under utilized tools for health in the home.  This article redefines the system approach to the home by expanding the title to HVACDAF(C). This part of the home is the most vital to keeping things alive because it is the heart and lungs of the home.

Deliberate Metal Poisoning; Exposing Some Astonishing Facts
(Article 5)

The information in this article is astoundingly real and whether you think your body recognizes metals as a toxin or not, it does.  Unfortunately, unknowingly, low level metal poisoning symptoms are often left unrecognized simply because most blood tests and even skin tests do not always register these levels.  I will start with the most invasive metal in our environment today: Mercury.

Combustible Fuels and Toxic Gases; Keep them Out!
(Article 6)
Obvious dangers of Carbon Monoxide as a toxic by-product of burning oil in furnaces and improper installation or leaking of gas appliances are covered well in the media and the written world.  There are other dangers to human health that result from combustible fuels and toxic gases that need to be carefully considered prior to deciding on the design of a new home, renovation of an existing home and even when choosing what type of appliances and mechanical systems to use in the home.

Electromagnetic Pollution; Invisible but Concrete Dangers
(Article 7)
Electromagnetic energy (EM) is everywhere, yet you cannot see it. You might say it is a part of our invisible world, which is true. However, it is also a very big part of our reality here in the visible world. Its origins are from God, the maker of all things in heaven and earth. You and I are one big electromagnetic field and so is the earth and sun and many elements of the earth. Once again, mankind has managed too askew this natural creation into something that is harmful to us. This article will clarify the ways that EMF’s (Electromagnetic Fields) have become and are dangerous to us.

Pros and Cons; the Truth about Ozone and
Ozone Generators for Indoor Air
(Article 8)

Ozone generation has good and bad implications on the earth and indoor air. It is a very controversial subject when it comes to air quality, indoors and out.  My job is to “clear the air” (no pun intended) on it’s role and effect on indoor air.
Ozone generation has many good benefits to it when it comes to cleaning the indoor air of a structure.  However, it also has some negative contributions to indoor air, mainly because it is being misused and abused as a tool.  This article focuses on ozone generation as it pertains to indoor air rather than outdoor air and it covers the pros and cons, controversies and praises of this tool that Shelter Ecology has been using for over 2 decades as a premiere cleaning tool for both biological and some chemically derived issues.
