This philosophy really works to keep the house healthy and energy efficient- especially since they do not have any attic space or crawl space. So the negative and positive air pressures in the house stay pretty even throughout the year.
Structurally insulated Panels (Sips) Sea Horse on demand
Sips (Structurally Insulated (Roof) Panels) panels being installed. Sea Horse on demand, super efficient water furnace mounted on the outside wall in the fern grotto. This little furnace heats all the floor and domestic hot water for both phase 1 and phase 2 = 2,400 square feet!
They chose to use radiant floor heat in the 520 square foot addition and a kickspace (under the kitchen sink cabinets) hydro space heater for the 380 square foot renovated pod (We will refer this the phase 1 addition from now on). A Jotul wood stove with stainless steel (fully cured) piping is used for back up heat during those really cold months of mid-January through early March. All their domestic hot water (including the heaters) is powered by a state of the art German based water furnace called Seahorse. This furnace is mounted on the outside of the house - which was great for the Pattons because they had limited space in the 900 square foot space. A propane line feeds this heater, but the other selling point of this awesome furnace is that no gas enters the space. All combustion processes take place outside at the heater itself. The Patton's bought a low boy Home Depot water heater that simply acts as a transfer device to send the water out as needed. It is tucked in a corner inside a kitchen cabinet; which would have been wasted space otherwise. This is an on demand heater (meaning it heats up the water and uses it as you need it rather than storing it), so the Home Depot water heater is not even used as a storage tank. This heater along with the radiant floor heat system is one of the wisest choices they made for the comfort, efficiency and health of their home.
